Seasonal, Part Time Downtown Common Area Laborer

The City of Hastings is seeking a part-time laborer to serve the Downtown Development Authority (DDA). This position focuses on maintaining the cleanliness and appearance of the DDA district, particularly in high-visibility areas and in preparation for community events.

Responsibilities include emptying refuse and recycling bins, properly disposing of cigarette waste from receptacles, and removing litter from sidewalks, streetscapes, and landscaped areas. The position also involves cleaning street furniture and public dining areas, monitoring plants such as hanging baskets, and ensuring watering systems are functioning properly. Additional duties include maintaining tree beds by removing weeds, conducting routine visits to high-use locations, and performing related tasks that support the beautification and upkeep of the district.

The wage for this position is $15.00 per hour, with up to 10 hours of work per week. The individual will report directly to the Superintendent of Streets and Construction.

Minimum qualifications include a valid Michigan driver’s license with a clean driving record, knowledge of basic repair tools and supplies and skill in applying them to maintenance procedures, ability to work independently and remain task-focused, and successful completion of a drug/alcohol screening, pre-employment physical, and background check. Competitive candidates will demonstrate a positive attitude and strong attention to detail.
