Full Time Firefighter/EMT-B
The City of Hastings is seeking a dedicated Firefighter/EMT-B to join our department. This critical role requires a strong commitment to serving the community while working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. The ideal candidate will possess a combination of firefighting, medical, and mechanical skills, as well as excellent communication, computer skills and teamwork abilities. Responsibilities:
- Respond to emergency calls, including fires, medical emergencies, and rescues.
- Provide medical assistance, including taking vital signs and administering first aid.
- Conduct rescue operations, using specialized equipment and techniques.
- Operate emergency vehicles, including ambulances and fire trucks.
- Perform heavy lifting and physical tasks in challenging environments.
- Maintain equipment, vehicles, and facilities to ensure they are in good working condition.
- Stay up to date with the latest firefighting and medical procedures.
- Collaborate with other emergency responders, including police and paramedics.
- Provide basic life support and CPR to patients in need.
Skills:
- Knowledge of vital signs and ability to take them accurately.
- First aid and CPR certification.
- Strong mechanical knowledge to operate and maintain firefighting and emergency equipment.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting and physically demanding tasks.
- Proficiency in basic life support techniques, including CPR and defibrillation.
- Computer skills with knowledge of Excel, Word and reporting software
- Organization skills
- Ability to work effectively in high-stress situations and maintain a calm demeanor in emergency situations.
Required qualifications:
- Must be 18 years or older at the time of employment.
- Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid Michigan Driver’s License without a record of suspension or revocation in any state.
- Must pass a criminal background investigation.
- Must be able to read and write the English language.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Completion of the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council Fire Fighter II, Hazardous Materials Operations, Michigan Emergency Technician Level B, American Heart Association CPR certification.
- Three (3) years’ experience in fire and emergency medical services work is preferred.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $19.87 – $24.84/hour DOQ
Expected work hours: 40 hours per week, with overtime for after-hours calls and training with paid on-call staff.
